Second-half explosion carries MSU past Abilene Christian, 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Facing a must-win scenario, Midwestern State came out flat in the opening half against Abilene Christian Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

Nothing could have prepared the Wildcats for the fury and explosion of MSU to start the second half.

The aggressive Mustangs tallied a two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to roll to a 3-0 win in the crucial NCAA Division II South Central Region contest.

"We made a few adjustments trying to get our midfield pinching in," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "That and the increase in intensity was the difference in the game."

Kat Bernick headed in a corner kick off of the boot of Kari Bristow as she set the new program record for career assists with her 22nd.

"That was a great goal to start it off," Trimble said. "She played a great defensive game and for her to get that goal was special."

Then sophomore forward Kelsie Hill took her, blasting her seventh and eighth goals of the season in the 56th and 65th minutes.

Hill took control of a loose ball in the midfield tucked a shot just under the cross bar in the upper-corner passed diving ACU keeper Crissy Lawson.

The Rider High product then converted a nice serve by Brittany O'Neal for a sliding goal in the 65th minute to give the Mustangs a commanding 3-0 lead.

This all after the Wildcats held MSU without shot in the opening half, but it was much different story after intermission when the Mustangs peppered ACU with 12 shots including nine on goal.

Midwestern State, which improved 12-3-2 on the season and 6-3 in conference play, plays host to Angelo State in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon for Senior Day at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

Abilene Christian fell to 10-6-2 and 5-3-2.
