CANYON, Texas - Clinton McFall hit a clutch trey from the left corner to ignite a 7-2 run in the final 1:17 as West Texas A&M pulled away for a 67-61 Lone Star Conference South Division win over Midwestern State Wednesday night at First United Bank Center.
"That ball grazed the backboard, but that's where luck comes in," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said.
The loss snapped the Mustangs' 10-game winning streak and is MSU's first setback since falling 56-55 at Northeastern State on Dec. 15.
But the Mustangs, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, clawed back with a 13-4 run and when
Marcus Anderson followed a three-point play by
Nolan Richardson with an 8-foot jumper in the lane, MSU trailed just 52-50 with 8:53 to play.
"Our kids just kept fighting," Ray said. "We had a chance and had momentum with three-straight stops, but we were unable to close the deal."
West Texas A&M regained control by scoring six of the next eight points, but the Mustangs fought through the standard physical play from the Buffs at First United Bank Center, where MSU has won just once in nine tries.
"We tried in practice the last two days to hold, clutch and kill each other, but we just weren't ready for this," Ray said. "I say this every year, but this just isn't basketball up here."
Still, MSU scratched back to within 60-59 with 1:34 to go on the strength of a 5-0 mini run fueled by a
Trajinski Grigsby 3-pointer from the top of the key and a pair of free throws by
Charlie Logan.
That's when McFall hit his bankshot trey from the left corner to ignite the Buffs' final flurry.
Nolan Richardson paced the Mustangs with 17 points with three 3-pointers and added five rebonds and four assists, while Grigsby added 12 points and five rebounds off of the bench.
West Texas A&M was led by Nick Burns, who hit for 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting including three 3s, while McFall added 10 points with a pair of treys.
Midwestern State, which fell to 13-5 on the season and 2-1 in the LSC South, plays host to Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoffs is set for approximately 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 6.
