Buben, Ofoegbu help Mustangs upend Angelo State, 79-77

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Andrea Buben connected on her career-best seven 3-pointer to beat the buzzer to send Midwestern State into overtime with Angelo State Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Then Rosy Ofoegbu dominated with eight points in the extra session to give the Mustangs a 79-77 win in their Lone Star Conference South Division opener.

Midwestern improved to 5-9 on the season, while the Rambelles were sent to 9-6.

Buben capped her career night with 29 points on a 9-of-17 shooting including a 7-of-13 effort from beyond arc. The junior guard from Duncan also contribued four assists and three rebounds

MSU rallied from 12 points down with 8:10 to go as the Mustangs used an 8-2 run to cut the Rambelle lead in half after Buben connected on a pair of with 6:24 to go to pull MSU within 62-60.

The Mustangs continued on the assault as Cierra Thompson hit a the backend of a two-shot foul after a Katiya Jackson layup before Buben nailed a trey from the top of the key to get MSU within two at 58-56 with 4:16 to play.

Midwestern took its first lead of the second half with Cierra Thompson hit a runner in the lane with 34 seconds to go in regulation, but Angelo State got a layup from Tiffany Hardwell and a pair of free throws by Camille Perkins to take a 68-65 lead with five seconds remaining before Buben beat the buzzer with her seventh 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.

Ofoegbu converted on each of her four opportunities in the paint in the extra period to score eight of her 13 total points for the game. The senior forward also had six rebounds and two steals.

Thompson completed a great all-around game with 18 points and nine rebounds while earning her way to the free throw where she made good on nine of her 10 attempts.

Jackson added 10 points and five rebounds, while junior point guard Michelle Duff finished with a season-high 11 assists.

Perkins paced the Rambelles with 23 points, while Lauren Weishuhn had eight points, eight rebounds and eight steals.

Midwestern State hits the road to face Texas A&M-Kingsville Satuday night at Steinke Center. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
