Midwestern State unable to conquer Javelinas, 63-57

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Andrea Buben continued her stellar play Saturday night at Steinke Center.

But the Mustangs were unable to sustain a great start as the Javelinas improved to a perfect 8-0 at home with a 63-57 Lone Star Conference South Division win.

Buben paced MSU for the second-straight game with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting including a 5-of-8 effort from the 3-point arc.

The Mustangs got off to a hot start and used a 14-2 run to build a 12-point lead when Rosy Ofoegbu hit a layup with 12:44 to play in the opening stanza.

Ofoegbu, who finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists, fueled the run with a pair of layups.

"Ideally, that's what we need to do every game, but then we had about eight possessions when we didn't score," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "We need to be able to keep them on their heels."

Texas A&M-Kingsville, which improved to 12-5 on the season and 2-0 in the LSC South, used the MSU lull to run off the next nine points then claimed its first lead of the game when Ursula Hill hit a jumper in the lane to put the Hoggies up with 4:27 to play.

The Javelinas, who led 35-31 at halftime, led by as many as 10 points in the second half before the Mustangs made a game of it again late.

But the Mustangs stepped up the defense and chipped away at the lead as Sunny Satery kicked started an 8-0 with only 3-pointer of the contest with 5:10 to go.

"We did a great job defensively and made them shoot over us down the stretch," Johnson said.

Buben followed a Katiya Jackson jumper with her fifth trey of the night to pull MSU within a point at 55-54 with 3:39 to play, but that's as close as the Mustangs could get.

It wasn't, however, their last gasp.

Ofoegbu converted a three-point play to pull Midwestern within a deuce at 59-57 with 1:45 to go.

The Mustangs then buckled down to force Texas A&M-Kingsville into a shot clock, but Michelle Duff was whistled for a moving screen on the opposite of the floor.

The Javelinas converted two of their four free throw in the final 14 seconds after Dyana Bullinger pulled in a key offensive rebound with 25 seconds to go.

Midwestern State, which fell to 6-10 on the season and to 1-1 in the LSC South, battles West Texas A&M Wednesday night at First United Bank Center in Canyon. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
