CANYON, Texas – Craig Sutherland's goal 50 seconds into the second overtime thwarted a furious comeback effort by No. 10 Fort Lewis and lifted No. 2 Midwestern State to a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon in the West Texas A&M Buffs' Classic at The Pitch.
It was an unlikely second goal of the match for the redshirt freshman from Edinburgh, Scotland after Fort Lewis scored two goals in the game's final seven minutes to negate a 2-0 Mustangs' lead.
Sutherland broke free in the box and
Ahmad Ihmeidan staved off three Fort Lewis defenders to find Sutherland, who flicked the ball to the far post for the golden goal.
The Ihmeidan-to-Sutherland connection also worked for the first goal of the match in the 57th minute.
Ihmeidan served a throughball to Sutherland, who settled the ball on the left side of the box ripped a shot to the far post to beat Fort Lewis keeper Zane Wells.
Landon Fruge' put the Mustangs up 2-0 in the 76th minute after
Kyle Kmiec struck a pass out wide. Fruge' gathered it in to beat Wells to the near post.
But Fort Lewis wouldn't go away as Tom Settle and Fabian Kling netted goals in the 85th and 89th minutes to force extra time.
Midwestern State, which improved to 3-1 on the season, next faces Texas A&M International in its home opener next Friday at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Fort Lewis fell to 1-1.
