WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State got exactly what it expected from Texas A&M International Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Dustdevils got what's expected from the No. 6 team in the nation as the Mustangs scored in the sixth minute then pulled away for a 3-0 victory to improve to 4-1.
"We knew they would be physical, but we've got to be able to handle that," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We were able to get a few good chances to come away with the result."
Junior transfer
Nick Auditore, who spent a redshirt season at MSU in 2005, connected for his first goal as Mustang in the sixth minute after
Kyle Kmiec's cross in front of the goal squirted free of Texas A&M International keeper Luis Ricon.
"The first goal is always the hardest one," Auditore said after scoring 44 goals at Mesa Community College over the past two seasons. "Hopefully more will come."
The Dustdevils went down a man in the 26th minute after defender Soamy Bautista viciously tackled MSU's
Kyle Hyden from behind to earn an ejection.
The blow sent Hyden off the pitch with an apparent leg injury.
"It was unfortunate about Kyle," Elder said. "But then after the ejection, we let down."
Despite playing much of the last 20 minutes of the opening half with a man advantage, the Mustangs were only able to produce five shots and held on to a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
But more consistent play in the midfield allowed MSU to pull away in the second half.
Estevao Alexandre pushed the ball ahead in the 76th minute before scoring on a header off of a cross from
Brian Martinez on the left wing.
Auditore added his second goal of the evening on a nice series of combo passes from midfielders
Rob Humphrey and
Ahmad Ihmeidan in the 80th minute.
Midwestern State will enjoy a two-week off period before traveling to Denver, Colo. to face Regis on Fri., Sep. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
