WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Katy Lukert's incredible lunging goal off of a beautiful cross from Brandy O'Neal gave Midwestern State a four-goal going into intermission.
But the goal just served as a prelude to a record breaking second half as the Mustangs set six school records and tied another on the way to a 13-1 drubbing of Northwestern Oklahoma State Friday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"They (Northwestern Oklahoma) had some injuries, but came out with intensity and played hard," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We were able to match that."
The 13 goals surpassed MSU's 12-0 win at Texas-Permian Basin on Oct. 3, 2001 and tied that contest for the largest margin of victory.
The Mustangs also set new program standards with nine goals in the second half. MSU also set new records in points with 38, assists with 12, shots attempted with 65 and shots on goal with 31.
Not lost in all the numbers was a brilliant home debut for former Wichita Falls Rider High School standout Kelsey Hill, who notched the 16th hat trick in school history.
"I was really proud of the way Kelsey played today," Trimble said. "It was special for her to come up with a hat trick in her first home match here."
Kendra Clemons and Megan Hanlon added two goals each and were joined in the goals parade by Kari Bristow, Lukert, Megan Bibilone, Madison Grassi and Lexi Elder.
The Mustangs, who were able to breakout after suffering a pair of shutouts last weekend at the Jennies' Classic in Warrensburg, Mo., continues their four-game homestand against New Mexico Highlands on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
