DENVER – No. 16 Metropolitan (Colo.) State fired the first salvo at Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at the Auraria Soccer Field.
Reigning two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kellen Johnson gave the Roadrunners a quick 1-0 lead just 4:48 into the match.
"They came out really hard and caught us really sleepy," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "(Johnson) ran right over the top and scored a really nice goal."
But the No. 3 Mustangs rallied for a two goals in the first half, then pulled away to take a 4-1 result as MSU claimed two wins in Colorado over the weekend to improve to 6-1 on the 2008 campaign.
"We're happy to get two road victories," Elder said. "To score eight goals on these teams was really impressive. We're ready to come home and play two great teams at home."
The Mustangs take on No. 18 St. Edward's, which fell 2-0 to Fort Lewis (Colo.) on Sunday, Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field, Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Estevao Alexandre netted the equalizer in the 16th minute off of
Ahmad Ihmeidan's team leading sixth assist this season before
Kyle Kmiec scored the first of his two goals Sunday when he collected a rebound and blasted a shot from just inside the box.
Metro State plugged to stay in the game and missed a golden opportunity early to score an equalizer of its own. The Roadrunners outshot MSU 20-16.
"They were putting up a fight and playing very hard," Elder said. "We had the better chances and the score really wasn't indicative of the game. I thought we played better Friday, but we played a better team today."
Kmiec, who scored another goal in the 61st minute, collected his second-straight multiple goal game to tie
Craig Sutherland for the team lead in goals with five.
Kmiec ran on to a through ball from Alexandre, fought off a couple of defenders then buried a shot under the Metro State goalkeeper to give the Mustangs a commanding 3-1 lead.
"It was a great individual effort and a great through ball," Elder said.
Rob Humphrey added an unassisted goal in the 79th minute to close out scoring.
The Mustangs have now their last nine matches against Metro State and are 10-0-1 all time against the Roadrunners.
