WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 2 Midwestern State made a halftime adjustment which resulted in the matches lone goal Friday night as the Mustangs took a 1-0 result over No. 21 St. Edward's at the MSU Soccer Field.
"We knew it would be a tight game and they came in ready to play," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "This is what MSU soccer is all about grinding out the tough results."
The Mustangs got a goal by forward
Craig Sutherland on a quick combination from
Estevao Alexandre and
Ahmad Ihmeidan in the 57th minute to provide the difference in the match.
"They were playing high up," Sutherland said. "We talked about doing quick 1-2-3s at halftime and it worked."
St. Edward's didn't make it easy in the back, cutting off any ball played in high.
"We realized they were good in the air," Elder said. "They dropped in a lot and center backs were winning everything."
Sutherland's goal was the freshman from Edinburgh, Scotland's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
"It's great to come into a good team," he said. "The goals have been put on a plate for me."
Senior goalkeeper
Shawn Carr recorded his third shutout of the season by recording four saves – three of which were of the one-on-one variety.
"We defended well and got back well defensively," Elder said. "And Shawn played really well after struggling last weekend."
The Mustangs play host to Incarnate Word, a 2-1 winner at West Texas A&M on Friday, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
