No. 23 Mustangs set school record with 17th-striaght win

LAWTON, Okla. - Shhh!

No. 23 Midwestern State set a program record by winning its 17th-straight match Thursday night with a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 win over Cameron at Aggie Gym.

Not that it means anything to Venera Flores-Stafford.

"For me, we have three wins," the MSU coach said referring to the Mustangs 3-0 start in Lone Star Conference play.

For the Mustangs which improved to17-0, it's more about the upcoming regional matches first at Incarnate Word on Saturday before rushing off to the Washburn (Kan.) Invitational next weekend in Topeka.

"All these upcoming matches are in-region matches where we need to have a good showing," Flores-Stafford said.

Cameron (6-7, 1-2) gave MSU a tussle Thursday night before a raucous crowd of 500 as the Aggies chased down 67 digs and recorded a tough 10 blocks forcing the Mustangs to a season-low .175 team hitting percentage.

"Our defense as a whole had a huge night," Flores-Stafford said. "This was the second match where we were up against a big block. We had to keep the ball up and see who made the mistake."

The Mustangs also flashed solid defensive numbers against the Aggies as Midwestern recorded 67 digs and had 10 blocks of their own.

Junior middle blocker Alysha Pritt, who also paced the Mustangs with 13 kills, finished with nine digs but also had a team-high seven blocks.

But she wasn't the lone Mustang to post strong individual numbers as senior libero Shay Velasquez finished with 16 digs, while Allison Schreiber capped off a double-double with 13 digs to go along with 40 assists.

Freshman Kiara Jordan provided a lift for the Mustangs as she made a pair of exceptional digs to push the tide in MSU's favor in the decisive 25-23 second set before showing a nice assortment of jump serves to act as a catalyst in the fourth set.

Jordan pulled the Mustangs even at 5-5 in her first service of the final set before rattling off a five-serve run as MSU pushed its advantage to 15-10.

"We play games in practice where all we try to do is make a run to keep the other team down," Flores-Stafford said. "So that was no surprise."

Jordan finished the night with nine digs and added two assists.

Junior middle blocker Sesley Graves gave the Mustangs a strong offensive effort with 13 kills while hitting .370.
