Mathis, timely defense lift Mustangs to 24-10 win over #21 Newberry

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Marcus Mathis rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown as Midwestern State dominated the second half of play to claim a 24-10 win over No. 21 Newberry (S.C.) Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs improve to 3-0 with the win, while Newberry falls 1-2.

Newberry went into intermission with a 10-3 lead after John Carnell connected with Brandon Bostick on a post route for a 52-yard score in the first quarter and NC's Britt Blackmon hit on a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter give the Newberry a 10-0 lead.

It was all Midwestern State the rest of the way.

The Mustangs chipped to within 10-3 at half after Jose Martinez connected on a 26-yard field goal midway through the second quarter as MSU erupted for the final 24 points of the game.

Midwestern tied the game on a 7-yard TD reception by J.J. Ford from Zack Eskridge early in the third quarter before Marcus Mathis raced 27 yards around left end after Herman Walker set up MSU at the Newberry 27-yard line with 2:24 to go in the third quarter.

It was the Mathis tandem that put the game away in the fourth quarter.

After Marcus Mathis raced 60 yards around left end, BeeJay Mathis gave the Mustangs a two-score advantage by racing untouched around right end as MSU led 24-10 with 6:20 reamaining.

The Mustangs defense was more than up to the task as they limited a potent Newberry attack to 30 rushing yards on 29 carries and forced NC into three-and-outs on 4-of-7 second-half possessions.

Kevin Birdow, Darius Bortters joined Walker with seven tackles each as Walker recorded an interception in his fourth-straight game and leads the LSC with three interceptions.

The Mustangs play host to Angelo State next Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set 7 p.m.

Newberry opens South Atlantic Conference play at home agianst Carson-Newman (Tenn.).
