STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Midwestern State found itself in a spot it hasn't been in this season Friday afternoon against Texas A&M International at the Tarleton State Invitational.
The Dustdevils fought back from a set-down, but couldn't convert on either of its four match-point opportunities as MSU hung on 21-25, 25-12, 25-7, 24-26, 24-22 to move to 11-0.
"Texas A&M International came out and played hard and were pretty scrappy club," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "After being down in the fifth set, I'm proud of the way the girls fought so hard to win."
The Mustangs rallied from 13-10 in the fifth set then dodged match points at 13-14, 14-15, 15-16 and 18-19 before consecutive kills by
Jessica Ransom and
Whitney Maxwell swung the momentum in MSU's favor at 20-19.
A few points later, junior
Alysha Pritt followed her 12th kill of the contest with her second service ace to give the Mustangs their 11th-straight win to start the season.
Midwestern closes the Tarleton Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow as it faces Texas-Permian Basin at 9 a.m. and Oklahoma Panhandle State at 2 p.m.
Maxwell produced an exceptional attack from the right side to lead the Mustangs with a season-high 20 kills while hitting .447, while Pritt finished with 12 kills and junior middle blocker
Sesley Graves added 10.
Senior setter
Allison Schreiber directed the Mustangs to a .289 attack percentage to finish with 52 assists and added nine digs.
Senior libero
Shay Velasquez notched a match-high 22 digs, while
Katie Guehler and
Jessica Ransom joined Pritt with seven digs each.
