WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Jessica Rodriguez capped a four-run comeback with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Midwestern State to a 6-5 win over Texas Woman's University in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs faced a 5-2 deficit and were down to their final out before
Lindsey Voigt deliverd a two-run to left field to narrow deficit to one run after
Tabitha Yannetti hit a one-single and
Ashley Kuchenski followed with a double.
Then, after fouling off five-straight pitches in a nine-pitch at-bat,
Maranda Bishop struck for a single to right field and advanced to second on a TWU attempt to throw Voigt out trying to advanced from first-to-third on the play.
Rodriguez followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to give MSU's its sixth-straight victory.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 16-9, while Texas Woman's drops to 7-19.
Midwestern State returns to Lone Star Conference North Division play when it plays host to Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
The Mustangs drew first blood with a pair of runs in the first inning as senior third baseman
Kristen Stonecipher roped an run-scoring single to right field, stole second and third before on a delayed steal to end the inning.
But MSU starter
Ashley Kuchenski and the Mustangs' defense was unable to hold on to the lead.
Midwestern committed five errors and Kuchenski allowed five runs – two earned – on eight hits while striking out two before leaving with two-on and no outs in the sixth.
Katie Petersen was greeted with a two-run double by Billie Callahan, but wouldn't allow another base runner in two innings as she won her 11th-straight decision to improve to 12-2.
Petersen has now allowed two earned in her last 12 appearances dating back to Feb. 10. She is 11-0 with 59 strikeouts and a 0.28 ERA while allowing 33 hits and 13 walks in 49 2/3 innings during her personal winning streak.
Voigt and Rodriguez each went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Mustangs' 11-hit attack, while Bishop extended her hitting streak to nine games with her seventh inning single.
Bishop also recorded a pair of outfield assists including gunning down a runner at the plate for the second-straight day. She now has four outfield assists this season.
