LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State's
Travis Stegner breezed past St. Mary's Marcos Villarreal 6-0 in the third set to clinch a 5-4 win for the Mustangs Saturday afternoon at the Cameron University Tennis Courts.
The win improves the Mustangs to 10-3 on the season as MSU recovered from a 6-3 loss to No. 23 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on Friday for a pair of one-match victories over Southeastern Oklahoma State and the Hilltoppers to close the Cameron Quad with a 2-1 mark.
Stegner, who was the last match off the court, lost the first set 6-3, but recovered for 6-2, 6-0 wins over the final two sets to clinch the win.
It was one of four singles' wins for MSU, which made a 2-1 deficit after St. Mary's claimed doubles' victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Stegner started the comeback as he teamed with
Chad Meeks to claim an 8-3 win over St. Mary's tandem Andres Guerrero and Russ Stowers at No. 3 doubles.
The Mustangs controlled singles play as
Karim Belhadj,
Zac Dillard and Meeks joined Stegner as winners.
