Mustangs open LSC North Division play tomorrow in Weatherford

Midwestern State kicks off Lone Star Conference North Division play Saturday afternoon at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Mustangs are 4-1 in divisional openers with their lone loss coming to Central Oklahoma last season.

First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Last time out

The Mustangs went 2-3 at the Eckerd College Spring Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. after splitting a doubleheader with the University of Tampa to go 3-4 last week. Senior C Lindsey Voigt extended her current hitting streak to eight games after collecting hits in each of MSU's seven games last week. Voigt was 12-for-24 (.500) at the plate with four doubles and a homer while driving in five runs. She also stole four bases and scored six runs. Sophomore pitcher Katie Petersen notched a pair of complete-game wins including her 12th career shutout. The Plano native allowed one earned run on eight hits while striking out 15 in 14 innings.

Scouting the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs split a home doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands Monday afternoon and bring a 5-5 mark into Saturday's North Division opener. Southwestern Oklahoma State is led by a trio of hitters over .300 as senior OF Megan McGill brings a .385 average into Saturday's twin bill followed by freshman OF Fallon Bradshaw at .357 and sophomore 3B Stacy Creger at .355. In the circle, junior RHP Brittany Strickland is 2-3 with a 4.04 ERA, while junior RHP Alex Zukerman is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

Who's hot

Lindsey Voigt slumped to .211 after going 0-for-3 on Feb. 9 against Henderson State on Feb. 9 at the Texas Woman's University Tournament in Denton. Since then, the senior catcher from Wichita Falls has been on fi re. Voigt has gone 14-of-26 (.538) in an eight-game hitting streak which includes four multi-hit games. She collected hits in each of MSU's seven games last week in Florida and has accounted for four doubles, two homers, eight RBI, eight runs and four stolen bases during the tear. But the streak is only Voigt's third longest since transferring to Midwestern from Vernon College before last season. She accounted for a pair of nine-game hitting streaks last season as she hit .433 from March 2-10, 2007, then hit .452 from March 20-April 3, 2007. The streaks were separated by one 0-for-3 outing against Cameron in the fi rst game of a twin bill on March 20, 2007.

Mustangs hot on the basepaths

The Mustangs have stolen 24 bases through their first 17 games after stealing a program-record 54 last season. MSU is on pace to steal 82 bases as a team this season. In comparison, the Mustangs recorded a total of 81 steals in their first three seasons of existence (2004-06). Lindsey Voigt leads the charge with eight thefts this season and passed former standouts Brandi Tynes and Cheyanne Paschal to become the program's all-time stole bases leader at 18. Tynes (2004) and Paschal (2007) each needed one season to steal 16. Kristen Stonecipher and Maranda Bishop are one behind Voigt with 17 career stolen bases.

Midwestern State at home

The Mustangs battle Abilene Christian in their home opener Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park. Midwestern State is 67-21 (.761) at home since the program was re-started in 2004. The Mustangs will be playing just their third game at the pristine Mustangs Park as they swept Southwestern Oklahoma State 3-0 and 2-0 in last year's regular season finale on April 28, 2007.
