ABILENE, Texas - Abilene Christian used a 16-2 second-half run to overcome a 14-point deficit then the Wildcats held on for a 90-86 win over Midwestern State Saturday night at Moody Coliseum.
The loss severely hampers the Mustangs' chances for the postseason as MSU dropped to 12-13 on the season and 4-7 in South Division play. The Mustangs close the season at Eastern New Mexico next Saturday in Portales.
Abilene Christian (18-7) improved to 5-5 and is now in a tie for third place with Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Wildcats close the season with games at West Texas A&M before playing host to the Javelinas next Saturday in Abilene.
The Mustangs currently sit sixth behind Angelo State, which improved to 4-6 in division play with a win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night.
MSU needs a win and two Abilene Christian losses to advance to the LSC Postseason Tournament next month in Bartlesville.
But the Mustangs looked in control when it had an extended 27-11 run at the start of the second half after hit the first field goal of the second half to take a 38-36 lead just 23 seconds into the half.
MSU had hit 11 3-pointers in the first 29:11 of the contest including four treys in the big run as the Mustangs led 63-49 after a
Marcus Anderson free throw gave them a 63-49 with 10:49 to go.
That's when the Wildcats erupted on a 16-2 run and the Mustangs went cold from the perimeter.
Ean Wagner got ACU going with a 3-pionter from the wing before Brandon Callahan followed with a runner in the lane and Stephen Musa converted a power dunk to cut the MSU lead to 63-56.
Then Cameron Holson hit a 3 from the top of the key before he was fouled on a baseline 3-pointer by
Trajinski Grigsby with 7:10 to go.
Holson converted the four-point play to pull the Wildcats within 65-63 before Wagner knotted the game with a pair free throws with 6:37.
The Wildcats would took the lead another Wagner 3-pointer and extended it to 80-72 with 1:29 to go.
The Mustangs clawed back to within two after Richardson's fifth 3 of the game as MSU trailed 88-86 with four seconds remaining.
Abilene Christian kept the Mustangs at bay by hitting 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the game.
Richardson paced the Mustangs with 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while
Jeremy Ford added 17 point on five 3-pointers.
Trajinski Grigsby addd 14 points and five rebounds, while
Chris Davis had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Corwin Ragland led Abilene Christian with 24 points and seven rebounds, includinga 13-of-17 effort from the free-throw line.
Midwestern State closes the regular season next Saturday at Eastern New Mexico.
