AUSTIN, Texas - Marissa Rauss poured in a game-high 16 points off of the bench to lead St. Edward's to a 65-51 win over Midwestern State Tuesday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
The Hilltoppers (5-7) broke open the game with a 19-3 run early in the first half and led 32-11 when Rauss hit a layup with 2:44 remaining in the opening the half.
St. Edward's matched its largest lead of the game on two occasions before Midwestern State junior
Emily Welborn hit a 3-pointer right before the half to pull the Mustangs to within 38-20 at intermission.
The Mustangs were led by senior post
Regiane Araujo, who was coming off of three consecutive double-double performances. She would finish with 10 points and seven rebounds and was plagued with foul trouble as she limited to 24 minutes of floor time.
Freshman forward
Cierra Thompson added eight points off of the bench, while
Rosy Ofoegbu added seven points, five rebounds and three points. Welborn also finished with seven points.
Araujo scored the first two baskets of the second half to pull MSU to within 38-24, but Rauss steadied the Hilltoppers with 12 points after intermission to keep the Mustangs at arm's lenght.
Midwestern, which dropped to 0-6 away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum and to 2-8 overall, plays host to Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday night in Wichita Falls. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
