Buben, Araujo break out to lift MSU past Savage Storm 76-71

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The inside-outside combo of Regiane Araujo and Andrea Buben proved too much for Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday night as the Mustangs came away with a 76-71 win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Araujo turned in a dominating performance as she finished with her fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and 17 rebounds while making her way to the free-throw line on 17 occasions.

Buben bombed in a career-best 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting including a pair of 3-pointers and also converted six of her eight free-throw attempts.

The Mustangs closed the first half on an 11-3 run to claim a 36-27 halftime advantage before extended the lead to 11 points on a pair of Buben free throws a minute and a half into the second half.

The Savage Storm rattled off seven-straight points midway through the second half to knot the game at 50-50 when Maggie Oliver canned a jumper from the elbow.

The teams exchanged the lead nine times in the second half before Buben followed a Katiya Jackson jumper with a successful conversion of a tradition three-point play to give MSU a 73-68 with 1:45 to play.

Southeastern's Destiny Brown canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:25 to go to pull the Savage Storm within two, but that would be SOSU's last field goal.

Michele Kenney and Jackson hit one of two free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the victory.

Brown paced Southeastern with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jasmine Hughey and Ashley Tucker pitched in 15 and 14, respectively.

Midwestern, which improved 3-8 on the season, plays host to East Central (Okla.) Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Southeastern Oklahoma fell to 7-4 on the season.
