Araujo keys big second half as MSU snaps skid, 73-67

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Regiane Araujo scored six-straight points as part of a 9-1 run midway through the second half to help Midwestern State erase an eight-point deficit as the Mustangs claimed a 73-67 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Araujo finished with a team-high 16 points and finished off her second-straight double-double with 10 rebounds to help the MSU snap its five-game losing streak to improve to 2-6 on the season.

The Mustangs complete a three-game home stand when they play host to Texas Woman's University in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Andrea Buben keyed an 8-2 run early in the second half with lone 3-pointer of the contest as Midwestern nullified a six-point UTPB lead when Katiya Jackson converted a steal into a layup to knot the contest at 40-40 with 15:45 to go.

After the teams exchanged baskets, MSU junior point guard Michelle Duff ignited the decisive run as she hit a jumper from the short corner on the right baseline then banged in the back end of a two-shot foul before Araujo finished the run with six-straight points.

The Mustangs led 51-43 when freshman Sunny Satery hit Araujo with a half-court lob pass with 9:39 remaining.

MSU, which would led by as many as 12, shot 46.2 percent from the field, including a 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) performance in the second half after trailing the Falcons 31-28 at intermission.

Araujo was the lone Mustang in double figures, but she had plenty of support as four other Midwestern players finished with at least eight points.

Rosy Ofoegbu and Savannah Carver joined Satery with nine points each, while Buben finished with eight points and five rebounds.

UTPB's Lauren Unger connected on five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 21 points, while freshman guard Tammy Acosta finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Falcons, who compete in the Heartland Conference, dropped to 2-9 on the season.
