WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's
Regiane Araujo dominated the matchup of big girls Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The senior transfer from Washburn poured in a game-high 22 points and pulled in a season-high 16 rebounds to get the best of Texas Woman's Renee Renz, who came into the contest third in the Lone Star Conference in scoring at 21.5 points per game and was tops in the league with 13.3 rebounds a game.
Renz finished the game with season lows of nine points and six boards, but TWU used a sparkling performance from Jessica Durr and turned 23 MSU turnovers into 25 points to steal a 63-60 win over Midwestern.
The Mustangs, who fell to 2-7 on the season, enjoy a 10-day Christmas holiday before traveling to Austin to take on St. Edward's (Texas) on Dec. 30.
Midwestern State controlled the battle on the glass by a 47-30 margin and led at intermission after freshman guard
Savannah Carver hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to put the Mustangs up 33-32.
But Texas Woman's took control of the contest with an 8-0 run midway through the second half fueled by four MSU turnovers in the span of 1:41.
Jessica Hanna hit an 8-foot jumper in the lane after Jessica Durr converted a pair of free throws and before Keshia Bolds and Renz hit consecutive layups to give the Pioneers an 51-41 lead with 10:57 to play.
TWU led by as many as 11 before the Mustangs ran off six-straight points as Araujo sandwiched a pair of layups around a fast-break bucket by Michelle Kenney to pull Midwestern within 62-60 with 50 seconds remaining.
The Mustangs forced a key stop on the defensive, but Kenney's 3-point attempt was off the mark with nine seconds to play.
After Renz connected on one-of-two from the free throw line, MSU junior guard
Andrea Buben's desperation attempt with two seconds to play was no good.
Katiya Jackson and
Rosy Ofoegbu joined Araujo in double figures for the Mustangs with 10 points each and pulled own six and eight rebounds, respectively.
Durr paced Texas Woman's with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Pioneers improved to 6-1.
