TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Midwestern State was on a mission to accomplish a pair of goals in Monday night's crossover contest at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.
Consider the missions a mild success as the Mustangs were able to limit Northeastern's touches by dominating the glass, but it was the RiverHawks that were able to execute their patented motion at critical times as NSU pulled away for a 58-54 overtime win.
"We executed up to the end of the second half, but we turned the ball over at critical times and you just can't do that," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said.
Andrea Buben and
Sunny Satery nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to key a 10-1 run in the final five minutes of the second half as
Cierra Thompson's layup with 54 seconds gave MSU a 48-46 lead.
But the Mustangs had to survive a pair of point-blank shots at the buzzer after Northeastern's Jasmine Wright tied the game with a runner with 49 seconds to play.
In between, Midwestern squandered a pair of possessions on consecutive travels.
The teams exchanged 4-0 mini-runs to start overtime before Sarah Millar buried her fifth 3-pointer of the contest to give the RiverHawks a 55-52 lead with 48.1 seconds to play in overtime as the Mustangs were held without a field goal over their final four possessions of the game.
The Mustangs, who fell to 1-5 on the season, controlled the glass as freshman forward
Cierra Thompson led the way with 13 rebounds. Overall, MSU outboarded the RiverHawks by a 48-30 margin.
"We did a good job of keeping them off of the offensive boards," Johnson said. "And we did a good job of keeping them in front of us and making them shoot over us."
The Mustangs limited the RiverHawks to five second-chance points off of six offensive boards as Northeastern shot just 35.6 percent from the field for the game.
Buben paced the Mustangs with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting including a 3-of-7 effort from the arc and was joined in double figures by senior post Regiane Aruajo, who had 11 points and six rebounds before following out in 28 minutes.
Millar paced Northeastern State (5-4) with 16 points off of the bench, while Jasmine Webb and Alix Perkins added 12 each.
It was the first of four games this week for the Mustangs, who battle Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum before playing host to Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday and Texas Woman's University on Saturday.
"This gives us a very positive outlook for the week," Johnson said. "We're getting to defend our home court. If we do what we did tonight, we'll get it done."
