WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 1 is a great reminder for the top-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs.
Doug Elder was definitely selling the No. 1 after the Mustangs dispatched St. Mary's (Texas) 3-0 to extend its winning streak to 12 matches Wednesday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"We have to take one game at a time and we have to perform every day," the MSU coach said.
Oh yeah, there was also one more one on the stat sheet against Rattlers.
And it resided under the shots taken column as the Mustangs notched their eighth whitewashing of the season.
"Our defense held strong," Elder said. "It was a good shutout for our keeper and for our defense."
Shawn Carr stopped a soft header by St. Mary's Bryon Plagge in the 23rd minute as he combined with
William Freeman for the shutout.
The Mustangs got on the board when junior
Nick Auditore hammered in his fifth goal of the season after
Estevao Alexandre redirected
Brian Martinez's corner kick to give MSU a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Junior
Bryan Sajjadi put the Mustangs up 2-0 on an assist from
Eddie Lett 44 seconds into the second half and
Robert Swann headed in his third goal of the season on Martinez's serve off of a free kick from the left wing in the 62nd minute.
The Mustangs have now won 12-straight matches for the sixth time in school history as they improved to 14-1 on the season.
