WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State was certainly in the Halloween spirit Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
But the No. 1-ranked Mustangs were not in the giving mood, but more a receiving one.
MSU treated itself to a pair of hat tricks on its way to a 9-0 drubbing of Missouri Southern State to extend its winning streak to 13 while improving to 15-1 on the season and 5-0 in Southwest Soccer Conference play.
"We scored some nice goals and buried some great opportunities," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We'll take the win because it puts us one step closer to a conference championship."
The Mustangs can clinch at least a tie for its third-straight conference title, but they can also match the school's longest winning streak with a victory over Northeastern State at the MSU Soccer Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
"It's important that we got a lot of different players on the field," Elder said. "That's important when you are playing three games in five days to come out healthy and injury free."
Junior
Bryan Sajjadi and freshman
Craig Sutherland notched hat tricks and each added an assists as the Mustangs piled up 28 points as a team and scored nine goals for the first time since the 2006 squad thumped Texas Wesleyan 9-0 on Oct. 5, 2006.
It was also MSU's most goals and the largest margin of victory in a conference game since entering NCAA Division II in 1997.
But it wasn't all about Sajjadi and Sutherland as
Ahmad Ihmeidan scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the first half and added his 11th assist of the season.
Sophomore
Chad Salyer also notched his first goal as a Mustang in the 32nd minute, while
Nick Auditore netted his sixth goal in the 57th minute.
The Mustangs rattled off five goals in a span of seven minutes in the middle of the first half to turn a one-goal advantage into a 6-0 deluge, then Sajjadi completed his hat trick 45 seconds before intermission to make it 7-0.
