WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's
Shay Velasquez led a quartet of Mustangs to record double-digit digs as MSU claimed a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 win over Tarleton State Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"I thought that would be the key for us this match," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We've been playing really strong defensively in practice, so I was not surprised by the effort."
With the win, the Mustangs snapped Tarleton State's eight-match winning streak as the TexAnns had won 16 of their last 18 matches.
Velasquez finished with 27 digs for the second-straight match as the senior libero from Amarillo also went over the 20-dig plateau for the third-straight match.
But she had plenty of help as the Mustangs recorded 85 digs as a team and frustrated the TexAnns into a .099 team attack percentage.
Senior outside hitter
Jessica Ransom added a season-high 15 digs to along with 10 digs for her second double-double of the season, while freshman
Kiara Jordan added 13 digs and senior setter
Allison Schreiber recorded her third-straight and eighth double-double of the season with 10 digs and 44 assists.
The Mustangs were also strong at the net as junior middle blocker
Alysha Pritt paced the team with seven total blocks, while
Sesley Graves and
Whitney Maxwell were joined by Schreiber with three total blocks. MSU finished with 10 total blocks.
Midwestern State worked hard offensive to place as three players each had at least 10 kills including Pritt, Ranson and
Sesley Graves, who finished with 10.
But the Mustangs recorded just a .133 team kill rate thanks to a pesky Tarleton State defensive effort as the TexAnns had 93 team digs led by libero Shea McBrearty's 23-dig performance, while Shay Gracy was in on nine blocks to a team 13-block effort.
The Mustangs, who improved to 5-0 at home, bounced back to win two-straight after dropping six of seven matches to improve to 21-6 on the season and 5-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
"The confidence and rhythm is back," Flores-Stafford said. "We have a hard week in front of us."
Midwestern State travels to Canyon to face West Texas A&M on Thursday before playing Eastern New Mexico in Portales on Saturday.
Tarleton State dropped to 17-7 overall and 7-2 in the LSC.
