Coffman sparks Mustangs to sixth-straight win, 89-70

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Three different Midwestern State players scored in double figures as Mustangs' coach Jeff Ray continued his mastery over Northeastern State coming away with an 89-70 win over the RiverHawks Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs won their sixth-straight contest to improve to 7-4 on the season and will face No. 23 Central Oklahoma Saturday night at Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for approximately 8 p.m.

Ray improved to 10-0 all-time against Northeastern State and 8-0 against NSU teams coached by Larry Gipson.

But it was junior point guard Jordan Coffman who got the Mustangs rolling on a 7-2 run when poked away an inbounds pass and scramble to save it under the MSU basket at the 15:34 mark of the second half.

He survived the scramble to dish a pass to an open Chris Davis, who canned one of his three treys to give the Mustangs a commanding 55-39 advantage.

After another Coffman steal, Jeremy buried another 3-ball as the Mustangs continued to build toward their largest bulge of the contest after Trajinski Grigsby hit a jumper in the lane to give MSU a 69-47 lead with 9:14 to play.

Coffman didn't score a point in the contest, but finished with eight assists and three steals in 22 minutes of play.

Nolan Richardson IV, who scored a four-point play and traditional three-point play on consecutive possessions, led the Mustangs with 19 points, while Grigsby added 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Davis added 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting including three treys, while Christopher Reay narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Northeastern State, which dropped to 5-6, was led by Steve Neal, who had 16 points and nine rebounds.
