CANYON, Texas - Midwestern State has seen just about enough of No. 5 at West Texas A&M over the past couple of seasons.
The Mustangs thought they'd seen the last of the former No. 5 last season as South Central Region Co-Player of the Year Damien Lolar ran out of eligibility after dropping 27, 21 and 29 points on Midwestern over the past two seasons.
Well, No. 5 was at it again for the Buffs Tuesday night at First United Bank Center.
No. 5 - Robert Lee - poured in a career-high 31 points to lead West Texas A&M to a 76-62 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State.
"Our kids fought really hard and played well tonight, but we didn't have an answer for No. 5," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "Anytime they needed a key basket, he got it for them."
Lee, a senior transfer from the University of Houston, shot 11-of-14 from the field including four 3-pointers and scored 20 points after the Buffs took a 34-32 lead into intermission.
He kickstarted a 7-0 run after
Nolan Richardson IV converted a three-point play to pull the Mustangs within 59-54 with 6:14 to play.
Lee's pass to Andre Hill for his second-straight dunk culminated the run and gave West Texas A&M a 66-54 advantage with 3:12 to go.
Richardson, who finished with a team-high 24 points, helped Midwestern State obtain its largest lead of the night after he converted an 8-foot runner and fed
Chris Davis for a transition 3-pointer as the Mustangs led 32-27 with 1:24 left in the opening half.
But the Buffs countered with a 7-0 run to take a 34-32 lead into the half after Lee closed the half with a trey from the right wing with 8 seconds remaining.
Lee was the lone West Texas A&M player in double figures, while senior forward Tyler Cooper finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Davis joined Richardson in double digits with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. It was the first time in four games the senior guard score more than 10 points after stringing together 13 games of double-digit scoring at the start of the season.
Junior forward
Trajinski Grigsby had eight points and seven rebounds including a pair of 3-pointers.
The Mustangs, who have lost five of their last six, will try to snap their three-game skid Saturday when they play host to Abilene Christian at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
