Mustangs hold off No. 14 Abilene Christian, 76-69

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State converted 10-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to snap No. 14 Abilene Christian's 11-game 76-69 Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs evened their season record at 9-9 while improving to 1-3 in division play, while Abilene Christian fell to 15-3 and 2-1.

Midwestern used a 12-2 run fueled by a 3-pointer by Trajinski Grigsby and back-to-back layups by Nolan Richardson IV and Chris Davis to build a 51-36 lead with 14:42 to go.

The Mustangs pushed the lead to 60-45 on another Grigsby 3-pointer at the 9:36 mark, then used a strong night at the charity stripe to hold on for the win.

The Mustangs connected on 20 of their 24 free throws (83.3 percent), while Abilene Christian misfired on eight of 28 shots.

MSU also used a 49-34 advantage on the boards as the Mustangs were led by Christopher Reay's 12-rebond effort, while Grigsby completed a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Earl Rabb excelled in his first start of the season at point guard, dishing out a career-high 10 assists while collecting six rebounds of his own.

True freshman post Charlie Logan completed a career night with 10 points, five rebound and four blocked shots in just 11 minutes of action.

Richardson and Jeremy Ford also finished in double figures for the Mustangs with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Abilene Christian was led by junior forward Cameron Holson for the third-straight game. Holson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Mustangs limited an ACU squad that entered the game shooting 53.1 percent from the field as a team to a 24-for-59 shooting night (40.7 percent).

Midwestern State will attempt to continue the momentum Wednesday night when the Mustangs travel to Angelo State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
