No. 18 West Texas A&M runs past Mustangs, 72-51

CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M closed the first half on an 18-0 run as the No. 18 Lady Buffs cruised to a 72-51 win over Midwestern State Wednesday night at First United Bank Center.

The Buffs, who improved to 13-3 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference South Division play, extended their current winning streak to seven, while advancing their home court streak to 40-straight wins.

Midwestern State, which fell to 7-9 and 1-2, used an 8-3 run fueled by a five-point spurt from sophomore Brittny Smith and claimed a 19-18 lead when Brittni Morrison canned a 15-foot jumper from the baseline with 5:25 remaining in the opening half.

But the field goal represented the last points in a 7:45 drought which extended ito the second half until Rosy Ofoegbu put back an offensive rebound at the 17:38 mark.

In between, the Lady Buffs peeled 22-straight points and led 40-21 after Ofoegbu's layup.

West Texas A&M hit 10 of its first 12 shots to open the second half to extend its lead to 28 points when freshman guard Joni Unruh hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Buffs a 61-33 advantage.

Unruh paced a pack of four Lady Buffs in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting while pulling down seven rebounds.

Junior forward Jamie Dreiling had 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Courtney Lee added 13.

The Mustangs held All-America guard Emily Brister eight points under her season average of 21, but she still managed 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.

The Mustangs were led by junior guard Brandy Moore, who connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points, while Morrison finished with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting including three 3's.

The Mustangs return to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday and play host to Abilene Christian. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
