DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State battled back to win the final three games to take a 3-2 victory over Arkansas Tech Friday night in Texas Woman's Tournament at Kitty Magee Arena.
The Golden Suns claimed the first two games 30-25 and 30-22 before the Mustangs roared back to take the final three by scores of 30-27, 30-24 and 18-16.
"I'm proud of the girls for the way they stepped up and battled back," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "They stepped forward after they were challenged. That really says a lot for the character of this team."
The win is the seventh straight for Midwestern, which improved to 9-2 on the season.
The Mustangs close the tournament with matches against Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) and Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday with start times of noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
Sophomore middle blocker
Alysha Pritt led the Mustangs with 18 kills and added 14 digs for her first double-double of the season, but it was senior outside hitter
Krissa Johnson that stepped up late in tight games.
Johnson's consecutive kills in the third game kept the Mustangs in the match, then she strung two more together to end the decisive fifth game.
Junior
Allison Schreiber led the MSU offense with 60 assists and added 10 assists and five kills, while junior libero
Shay Velasquez had 25 digs.
