EDMOND, Okla. – The word in practice over the past week was very clear to Midwestern State after failing to score in 44 shots last Friday against Texas-Permian Basin – finish.
The message hit home Friday afternoon as eight different Mustangs scored in an 8-0 throttling of Newman University (Kan.) at Central Oklahoma's Tom Thompson Field.
"We worked this week on finishing our chances," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "We definitely got it done today. I'm proud of the girls."
Cassidy Guice put MSU on the board in the eighth minute of the contest when she headed
Brittany Burney's corner kick to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Brandy O'Neal and
Jordan Smith added goals before the intermission as the MSU advantage grew to 3-0.
Megan Bibilone, Burney,
Katy Lukert,
Erin Torres and
Lauren Smith all added scores in a five-goal second half.
Midwestern State's back line, led by senior
Tory Broadhurst, continued its stellar play by limiting the Jets to three total shots while recording the Mustangs' third-straight shutout.
Junior
Heather Primavera extended her shutout streak to 341:49, the fourth longest in MSU women's soccer history, by working a scoreless first half.
"This type of a win is good for us because of our youth," Trimble said. "It gives them confidence and that is important moving further into the season."
The Mustangs, who improved to 3-0-1, will battle Southwest Baptist (Mo.) Saturday at noon.
Newman fell to 1-2 on the season.
