MSU blows away Dustdevils, 7-0

LAREDO, Texas – Midwestern State's Brandy O'Neal netted a pair of goals after intermission to pace a five-goal second half explosion as the Mustangs claimed a 7-0 win over Texas A&M-International Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

"We started slow with the travel and the hot weather," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "The girls played well, but this was a good test for us."

The Mustangs improved to 6-1-2 overcoming the 540-mile trip after taking a 2-1 win two nights before at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford.

Midwestern's road trip continues Sunday afternoon when it takes on Incarnate Word (5-1-1) in San Antonio at 2:30 p.m.

"We'll have to play some really good soccer to win that one, especially there," Trimble said. "We just want to take it one game at a time."

Sophomore forward Katy Lukert hit Brittany Burney on a breakaway as the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

MSU would add a second goal before intermission when Texas A&M-International keeper Mary Jo Hall mishandled a play on freshman midfielder Jordan Smith's corner kick in 42nd minute.

O'Neal spearheaded the aggressive attack in the second as junior Megan Bibilone, freshman Lauren Smith and sophomore Erin Torres each added goals for the Mustangs, who outshot the Dustdevils 26-6.

MSU keepers Heather Primavera, Ashley Meek and Kaitlin McDaniel combined on the Mustang's fifth shutout of the season.

Texas A&M-International fell to 1-7 on the season.
