PORTALES, N.M. – Daniel Brown scored two goals to help No. 13 Midwestern State to a 5-0 win over Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.
Brown, who now has nine goals this season, converted his first opportunity in the 19th minute before
Efren Castillo scored on a corner kick with less than a minute remaining before intermission.
"The second goal right before the half was key," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "In the second half, they didn't show much intensity and that took its toll."
The Mustangs moved to 8-1 on the season and are 4-0 the first time through the Southwest Soccer Conference, while the Greyhounds dropped to 3-5 and 1-2.
Eastern New Mexico lost its composure in the second half as Ryan Atkinson drew his second caution in the 52nd minute before Adam Diehl was ejected in the 86th minute.
The Mustangs had already pushed the advantage to 3-0 before the first ejection after junior midfielder
Ahmad Ihmeidan chipped in a deflection off of a
Kyle Kmiec shot in the 50th minute.
The Greyhounds yielded Brown's second goal of the game on a corner kick in the 72nd minute when they were down a man before
Estevao Alexandre added the fifth in the 87th minute off of another corner opportunity when ENMU was down two men.
"We're surprised we won by as much as we did," Elder said. "ENMU had just beaten Missouri Southern 2-0 on the road after West Texas had only won 1-0 there. They are a very good team."
The Mustangs defense limited the Greyhounds to four total shots and two shots on goal as junior keeper
Shawn Carr delivered his second shutout of the season.
MSU has now allowed three goals in nine games for a 0.33 goals against average.
The Mustangs return to the MSU Soccer Field on Wednesday night when the play host to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
