Bronchos snap MSU’s 12-match winning streak, 3-0

EDMOND, Okla. – Central Oklahoma claimed its 19th-straight win over Midwestern State as the Bronchos crushed the Mustangs' longest winning streak in 13 years 32-30, 30-26, 30-27 Thursday night at Hamilton Fieldhouse.

"I'm disappointed because we let them dictate the pace of the game," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "Tonight, they were the better team and deserved to win."

Central Oklahoma, who used a dink, dunk and deliberate game to contain the Mustangs' momentum, was led by junior outside hitter Mari Araujo, who had a game-high 18 kills and earned a double-double with 17 digs.

UCO also go a stellar performance from sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Reynolds, who had 12 kills and seven digs, while senior libero Lacie Allen notched 20 digs.

The Mustangs averaged a combined 12 errors a game (nine attack, two service and a ball-handling error) which allowed the Bronchos to claim the first two games despite notching 16 and 15 kills, respectively, while hitting .154 as a team in the opening game.

Midwestern, which outkilled the Bronchos 56-51 for the match, was led by junior outside hitter Jessica Ransom's 14-kill performance, while sophomore middle blocker Sesley Graves added 11.

Junior setter Allison Schreiber recorded 47 assists, while junior libero Shay Velasquez paced the Mustangs with 20 digs.

The Bronchos, who now lead the overall series with MSU 20-3, improved to 12-4 on the season and are now 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Mustangs, who suffered their first loss since falling 3-1 at West Florida on Aug. 25, drop to 14-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference.

The loss ends a 12-match winning streak which is the third longest in school history for MSU which claimed 16 consecutive victories in 1988 and 1995.

Central Oklahoma has now won the last 11 matches between the programs played at Hamilton Fieldhouse after falling to Midwestern State in four games in 1987.

Midwestern will look to rebound Saturday at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
