EDMOND, Okla. – Midwestern State goalkeeper
Heather Primavera collided with a Central Oklahoma Broncho in the 33rd minute Wednesday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.
It was Primavera who took the business of the collision, having to leave with a broken nose allowing No. 19 Central Oklahoma to take control for a 3-0 victory in the Lone Star Conference opener for both sides.
"I don't feel the score represented the game," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "But take nothing away from UCO, they did play better than we did."
Primavera had to make one save in the opening 32:28 of the match and left with the score knotted at 0-0 before giving way to sophomore
Ashley Meek between the posts.
"It was a tough situation for Ashley to be in," Trimble said. "We got thrown off (by Primavera's injury) and they kept the pressure on."
Less than a minute after the goalie collision, Central Oklahoma's Kristen Juroch ripped a shot into the net from the top of the box to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.
Lacy Cooley added a second goal before intermission off of a cross from Kasey Mahaffey to put Central Oklahoma up 2-0.
The Bronchos (6-2-1, 1-0) added a third goal in the 82nd minute when Ashton Morris' 35-yarder glanced off of Meeks hands and into the goal.
One of the Mustangs' lone chances came when
Chelsea Sawyer worked into the Central Oklahoma box and beat keeper Carly Fischer, but her shot glanced off of the crossbar as the game remained tied midway through the first half.
Midwestern, which fell to 3-1-2 and 0-1 in conference, returns to the MSU Soccer Field on Sunday when it plays host to Angelo State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
