WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Memories of the University of Texas-Permian Basin were still in the minds of the Midwestern State Mustangs Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs couldn't shake the memory of putting 24 shots on goal in their last home match and not seeing a single one hit the net.
There were many similarities on Sunday, but the result was much different as Midwestern State pounded out 35 shots and earned a 3-0 win over Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference tilt.
"That game was still in our minds," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "It was good for us put up that many shots and not score in the long run. You just can't do that and not score. We just kept pounding away today."
MSU freshman
Ashli Smith scored the first of her two goals in the 40th minute when she knocked in
Jordan Smith's rebound off of Angelo State keeper Natalie Shannon to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
But it was the second goal right by freshman Brandy O'neal before intermission that provided the spark that allowed the Mustangs to settle in for the second.
"That goal was big for us because it gave us confidence and allowed us to relax in the second half," Trimble said.
O'neal's goal came on a nice give-and-go after MSU pressure in the Angelo State backfield gave the Mustangs a golden opportunity 34 seconds before intermission.
Kendra Clemons served a nice lead pass in the box behind O'neal's back. O'neal gathered in the pass and beat the keeper to the left corner of the net as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Ashli Smith added her second goal of the contest and fourth of the season when an Angelo State misclear bounded off of her back and into the goal in the 71st minute.
The Mustangs had to feel a snake bitten throughout much of the contest as they sent three shots off of the crossbar and another of the post.
Senior
Brittany Burney put the first two off the crossbar in the first half as the senior middle fielder peppered the ASU goal for five shots.
The MSU back line of
Tory Broadhurst,
Cassidy Guice,
Melissa Brown and
Kendra Clemons helped limit the Rambelles to six shots with none on goal as goalkeepers
Ashley Meek and
Kaitlin McDaniel combined on the shutout.
The Mustangs (4-1-2, 1-1) hit the road this week to face LSC foe Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday before stepping out of league play next weekend with matches at Texas A&M-International and Incarnate Word.
Angelo State fell to 2-6-1 and 0-2.
