#16 Mustangs stifle Missouri Southern, 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 16 Midwestern State closed out its six-match home stand with a 3-0 win over Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs fought off a sluggish first half as the MSU out shot the Lions 9-1, but only put three of shots on goal.

"We were a little worried in the first half," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "Our goal in the second half was to get more shots on frame."

Although the Mustangs found it difficult to create many dangerous opportunities, Jake Landon cashed in a lead pass in the box from Obed Becerra in the 15th minute that held up for a 1-0 lead going into intermission.

That would be all the MSU defense would need as it allowed a single shot from Missouri Southern and allowed junior goalkeeper Shawn Carr to earn his first shutout as a Mustang without facing a single shot on goal in 90 minutes of play.

The Mustangs have now shutout their last three opponents and have only allowed two goals in seven games this season.

"We have still have some mental lapses," Elder said. "There are still some things to work on, but after our preseason if you would have told me we'd be 6-1 right, I would have said you are crazy."

Midwestern State added a pair of tallies in the second half as Daniel Brown notched his seventh goal of the season in the 60th minute and Kyle Kmiec converted a header after Eddie Lett hit the crossbar from point-blank range in the 69th minute.

The Mustangs (6-1, 2-0) will hit the road for a pair of crucial Southwest Soccer Conference matches next weekend at West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico.

"You have to be pretty excited (about our record) going into a long road trip," Elder said. "We have a few real battles and tests especially this weekend at WT."

The Mustangs have won the last four matches against the Buffaloes, including a 4-3 victory in the SSC championship game last fall.
