CANYON, Texas – No. 13 Midwestern State dodged a few bullets Friday afternoon at The Pitch, but when the opportunities were there the Mustangs capitalized with a 3-1 win over Southwest Soccer Conference rival West Texas A&M.
Kyle Kmiec had a goal and an assist while
Ahmad Ihmeidan and
Jeremy Elder also added goals for the Mustangs, who improved to 7-1 on the season.
"It was a good way to start the trip and keeps us ahead in conference," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "Our defense played outstanding against one of the better West Texas A&M teams we've faced."
The Buffaloes, who dropped to 5-1 on the season, were unable to take control of the match early despite building a shot advantage of 21-9.
"They had two opportunities where the ball was in front of our net for about 30 seconds, but we were able to keep the ball out of the net," Elder said.
Elder cited the play of goalkeeper
Jeremy Turner and defender
Robert Swann as the Mustangs had to make the adjustment to West Texas A&M's narrow pitch.
A team effort on the offensive emd gave MSU a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Kmiec netted his fifth goal of the season on a cross from
Tyler Murphy.
"We didn't get many shots, but the shots we got were very good," Elder said. "We got the opportunities and we scored them."
Ihmeidan put the Mustangs up 2-0 in the 57th minute when he dribbled into the middle of the box and launched a shot past West Texas A&M freshman keeper Shane Taylor.
MSU freshman
Jeremy Elder would make Taylor pay for another mistake in the 71st minute when Taylor mishandled a pass allowing Elder a good look at an empty net as the Mustangs built a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Buffaloes fought back in the75th minute to pull within two goals on Esphanho Da Costa's first goal of the season.
"(The win) was not an easy task," Elder said. "Credit to the other side as they kept coming with numbers. It was good collective team effort today."
The Mustangs, who also improved to 3-0 in conference play, continue on the road Sunday against Eastern New Mexico in Portales. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
