WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Texas A&M-Commerce threw a series of change-ups at Midwestern State Saturday night in Lone Star Conference tilt at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"They came at us with an off-speed game that I'm sure will catch a few teams later in the season," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "The girls are playing with purpose. We have to go in with that every time."
The Mustangs used the intensity to roll to a 30-20 win in Game 1 and bounce back for a 37-35 decision in the second game before closing out the Lions 30-23 to claim their 12th-straight win and improve to 2-0 in conference play.
After Midwestern controlled the opening game, Texas A&M-Commerce showed a short service game in an attempt to disrupt the Mustangs' tempo.
"It caused us a few problems at the beginning of the game, but we made some adjustments to our serve-receive," Flores-Stafford said.
The strategy allowed the Lions hang close, but MSU fought off four TAMUC game-point opportunities to go up 2-0.
Once again, the Mustangs used solid service games to take control of the match as junior
Shay Velasquez and senior
Rachel Gilmore each had three aces in MSU's nine-ace attack.
"We're using more jump serves this year as we have become more aggressive," Flores-Stafford said after the Mustangs committed 14 service errors. "We were willing to give up some service errors for aces, but we'd like to be a little closer to a 1-to-1 ratio."
Midwestern was led by senior outside hitter
Krissa Johnson, who had 14 kills and a .257 attack percentage, while junior
Jessica Ransom added 10 kills.
Junior setter
Allison Schreiber had a double-double with 45 set assists and 10 digs.
The Mustangs were led defensively by Velasquez and Gilmore, who had 13 digs each.
Midwestern State (14-2) travels to Central Oklahoma next Thursday before facing Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford on Saturday.
Texas A&M-Commerce dropped 3-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
