No. 16 Midwestern drowns RiverHawks, 38-7

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's Daniel Polk threw for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns and the No. 16 Mustangs' defense put on a dominant performance as MSU rolled to a 38-7 win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Polk completed 19 of his 22 passes including a 39-yard scoring connection with DelJuan Lee and a 14-yard TD strike to Sasan Faradineh while rushing for a game-high 68 yards and another score.

But it was junior punt returner B.J. Mathis who gave the Mustangs great starting position all afternoon before breaking free on a 70-yard return for touchdown a minute into the fourth quarter.

Mathis recorded 142 yards on seven returns which is the second most for an MSU player in a single game.

Polk's 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the 30th of his career to set another MSU all-time career record. The 6-2, 202-pound senior is now tied with former teammate Ross Harrison for the most career touchdowns mark.

But Polk wasn't the only one to shine for the Mustangs as the balanced attack chewed up 461 yards.

Junior transfer Joe Chatman led the backfield by committee that churned out 265 yards on 46 attempts with 65 yards, including 48-yard burst in the third quarter.

Freshman Marcus Mathis rushed for 42 yards on 10 carries, while senior Adrion Butler added 21 more on six totes.

The Mustangs' defense also showed balanced production as the unit stung the RiverHawks with 11 tackles for loss for 40 yards as Northeastern State had only one first down through the middle of the third quarter that wasn't the result of a penalty.

Twenty different Mustangs recorded at least two tackles led by junior transfer linebacker Jacob Martin, who had six tackles followed by Darrell Freeman's five while Ryan Craven and Cedric Johnson each had four.

Midwestern State, which improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference, will travel to Ada, Okla. to take on East Central next Saturday at 6 p.m.

Northeastern State dropped to 0-3 and 0-2.
