DALLAS – Midwestern State rolled to its 10th-straight victory taking a 3-1 decision from Dallas Baptist Tuesday night at Burg Center.
The Mustangs improved to 12-2 on the season by scores of 30-21, 27-30, 30-22 and 30-21, but will only get to enjoy the program's best start since the 1988 started the season with the same record.
"I feel like we're starting all over," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We're back to 0-0 because conference is where it counts."
MSU kicks off conference play with a pair of matches at home against Texas Woman's on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday at 7 p.m.
Ironically, Midwestern also brought a 12-2 record into a match against the Pioneers 19 years ago. MSU claimed a victory in that match, lost two then won seven more.
Midwestern finished that season as the NAIA District 8 champions with a 33-12 overall record.
Back in the present, it was junior setter
Allison Schreiber that posted 55 assists and served up double-figure kills to four different players led by senior outside hitter
Krissa Johnson, who finished with 14.
Junior middle blockers
Whitney Maxwell and
Jessica Ransom finished with 12 kills each, while freshman outside hitter
Lauren Hubbard put away 11 kills without an error to post a .524 attack percentage.
The Mustangs improved on their Lone Star Conference leading .233 hitting percentage by posting a .345 team kill rate including a dominant .484 over the final two games.
Sophomore middle blocker
Alysha Pritt led the charge defensively with four total blocks and nine digs, while junior libero
Shay Velasquez posted a team-best 14 digs to go along with seven service aces.
The Mustangs have now won 10 straight for the first time since the 1995 squad won 15 consecutive matches.
"I feel confident going into conference play," Flores-Stafford said. "If we keep our focus and intensity, we will have a shot a title."
