Brown, Kmiec pace No. 11 MSU past St. Mary’s 4-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Midwestern State forwards Daniel Brown and Kyle Kmiec scored two goals apiece to lead the No. 11 Mustangs to a 4-1 season opening win over St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's Soccer Field.

"We came out with a lot of intensity and created a lot of chances," MSU Doug Elder said. "I'm excited to get the win, but still have to clean up the mistakes we're making, but this is a good way to start."

Kmiec got the Mustangs started by taking a cross from Brown to and scored midst a crowded box to give MSU a 1-0 lead just 7:31 into the contest.

Brown extended the advantage to 2-0 when he picked up a loose ball in the box and beat St. Mary's Brett Collier.

St. Mary's fought back with a tally in the 54th minute from Kris Sumpter to close within 2-1, but the aggressive play of reserve midfielder Estevao Alexandre and a save on a St. Mary's break away by Mustangs' keeper Jeremy Turner stemmed the tide.

Brown added his second goal of the match off of a cross by Efren Castillo to make it 3-1 and Kmiec added his second goal on a long pass from Brian Martinez for the final score of the game.

The Mustangs (1-0) play host to Colorado State-Pueblo Friday night at 7 p.m., while the Rattlers fell to 0-1.
