Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown, Ihmeidan lead #11 Mustangs to 6-0 rout of Thunderwolves

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Colorado State-Pueblo was ready to match No. 11 Midwestern State's intensity Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

But while Colorado State-Pueblo was piling up six cards, the Mustangs were putting the ball in the back of the net with regularity as forward Daniel Brown and Ahmad Ihmeidan scored two goals each in a 6-0 thrashing of the Thunderwolves.

"What do you call a game when you play like we did on our home field in front of an excellent crowd and a lot of alumni?" MSU coach Doug Elder said. "I guess we'll call it revenge."

Colorado State-Pueblo was one of only two teams to upend the Mustangs in a magical 18-2-2 season in 2006.

"We had great offensive production tonight," Elder said. "The intensity was good and the communication was good."

Ihmeidan got the Mustangs rolling in the first half when he ripped a one-timer from 5 yards outside of the box past CSUP keeper Arturo Moranchel at the 15:10 mark of the first half before Brown added successive goals 1:06 apart to give MSU a 3-0 lead 31:53 seconds into the contest.

The frustration mounted after Ihmeidan headed Brian Martinez's restart into the net as the Mustangs built a 4-0 advantage six minutes into the second half.

Shortly after, CSUP midfielder Sam Henritze earned a red card to put the Mustangs a man-up with more than 36 minutes remaining in the contest. It was one of six cards for the Thunderwolves, who earned five more cautions while committing 18 fouls for the game.

Sophomores Kyle Kmiec and Matt Nauman added goals down the stretch to give the MSU a six-goal win.

Elder credited the midfield for stepping up its play after sluggish preseason as it accounted for three goals and an assist.

"That's the midfield we need to have to win this region," Elder said. "The were working hard and getting back defensively, as well. This was a good all around performance and the defense held strong."

The Mustangs (2-0) produced 39 shots with 14 on goal, while limiting CSUP to three total on the evening.

"This is more of the way I was expecting us to play," Elder said. "If we continue to play like this, we'll be tough. This was a good confidence builder for us."

Midwestern State will face Metro State, who went 2-0 with a win over preseason No. 3 West Florida in Pensacola last weekend, under the lights at the MSU Soccer Field on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Roadrunners were postponed due to lightning Friday night at Regis.

Colorado State-Pueblo falls to 1-2 on the season.
