WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State won its first ever doubleheader at the new Mustangs Park sweeping Southwestern Oklahoma State 3-0 in Game 1, and 2-0 in Game 2.
With the wins, the Mustangs clinched their third Lone Star Conference North Division title, and claimed a No. 1 seed in the upcoming LSC Softball Conference Tournament for the third time in four years.
In the first game, MSU scored its first ever run at Mustangs Park in the bottom of the fifth inning, on a one out single by
Lauren Craig, which scored
Lindsey Voigt from third. The Mustangs added a second run in the fifth, on an RBI single by
Cheyanne Paschal, which scored
Tabitha Yannetti. Midwestern then added another run in the bottom of the second, on a
Kelli Shaw RBI double that scored
Kristen Stonecipher. Shaw finished the game going 2-2 with a double and one RBI. Pitcher
Katie Petersen had another strong outing on the mound, striking out five, in five hit shut out. She improves her record to 22-11 on the season.
In the second game, the Mustangs started the scoring in the bottom of the second, on a two out RBI single, which scored
Kelli Shaw from second on a close play at home plate. Midwestern added its second run in the bottom of the sixth, as
Amanda Hill hit an RBI single which scored Shaw from second. Pitcher
Ashley Kuchenski took the mound, allowing just five hits and striking out six, in the complete game shutout. She improved her record to 17-3 for the season.
For the first time, the LSC championship tournament will feature an eight team field, with the top four teams from each division making post season play. Midwestern, who is the defending LSC Champion, will face the fourth seed from the South Division -- Texas Woman's --Â in the first round of the double elimination tournament. The game is set for Thursday at 7 p.m., at Southwest Park in Irving.
