Mustangs Beat No. 9 Central Oklahoma

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The Midwestern State softball team stayed perfect at home (8-0) and picked up two Lone Star Conference North Division wins as they swept a doubleheader against ninth ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos, 5-1 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

In game one, MSU hitter Tara Staten sparked the offense, as she connected in the fifth inning for her first homerun of the season. Midwestern then had a four-run sixth inning sparked by an RBI triple by Lindsey Voigt. The Mustangs received a great game from pitcher Katie Petersen, who pitched five perfect innings, before giving up a hit in the top of the sixth. She finished the game allowing four hits, striking out three, and allowing one earned run as she moved her record to 9-7.

In game two, MSU scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, and then held on for the win. Leading hitters for the Mustangs were Cheyanne Paschal, 3-4 a double one RBI, and Jessica Rodriguez, 2-3 with two RBI's. Pitcher Ashley Kuchenski improved her record to 9-1, as she allowed nine hits, struck out five, and had three earned runs.

Midwestern (18-8, 2-2) will be home again in LSC North play when they host East Central University (Okla.) on Friday. The two teams will play a doubleheader with game one set to start at 2:00 p.m.
