Central Oklahoma sweeps MSU Softball

EDMOND, Okla. – The start of Lone Star Conference North play was not kind to the Midwestern State University Mustangs Wednesday afternoon as the University of Central Oklahoma beat MSU in both halves of the twinbill, 7-4 and 4-3 in eight innings.

The losses drop MSU to 13-7 overall, 0-2 in the division, while UCO moves to 3-1 on the young season, 2-0 in division play.

Game one saw UCO take a 2-0 lead, then break the game open with a four-run third inning.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the sixth before the Mustangs woke up.

In the top of the seventh MSU plated four runs getting two RBI hits from Tara Staten and Amanda Hill.

UCO ace Alli Blake got the win , giving up five of MSU's seven hits in the seventh without a strikeout.

MSU's Katie Petersen suffered the loss, striking out three, but allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits.

The nightcap saw the Bronchos jump on top 2-0 in the third before MSU answered in the top of the sixth.

With two on and one out, shortstop Kelli Shaw put an RBI single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw in.  But the next play saw catcher Lindsey Voigt picked off a third just before Staten's second RBI double of the day plated Shaw.

MSU grabbed the lead with a Jessica Rodriguez RBI single in the seventh, but the Bronchos rallied to score an unearned marker in the bottom of the inning.

UCO got a double from Karmen Kauk and an RBI single from Jodi Craig to win the game in the eighth.

MSU lefty Ashley Kuchenski was tagged with her first loss of the season, allowing nine hits without a strikeout to fall to 6-1.  UCO's Hillary Brandt (1-1) got her first win, striking out six Mustangs and allowing eight hits.
