Mustangs fall to No. 18 Texas A&M-Commerce, 67-53

COMMERCE, Texas – Midwestern State couldn't quite get over the hump in Saturday afternoon's Lone Star Conference crossover at the Texas A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse as the Mustangs fell to the No. 18 Lions 67-53.

The Mustangs, who fell to 2-4, shook off a sluggish start and closed the first half with a 13-5 flourish to close to within 31-22 after trailing Texas A&M-Commerce by as many as 19 points.

But after MSU's Rosy Ofoegbu opened the second half with a layup to cut the deficit to seven, the Lions rattled off the next nine points to take a 40-24 lead with 17:10 remaining.

The Mustangs whittled the lead back down to eight after Brandy Moore canned her only 3-pointer of the game to cut the Texas A&M-Commerce advantage to 43-35 with 13:29 to go.

Moore, who had connected on 44.4 percent of her trey attempts coming into the contest, struggled from the floor. The junior transfer from San Antonio connected on just four of her 17 field goal attempts, including a 1-of-9 effort from 3-point range.

The Mustangs shot a season-low 34.8-percent from the floor as a team and was 2-for-20 from the arc.

The Lions answered the spurt with a 7-2 run of their own on their way to extending their advantage to 61-41 after Dominee Evans converted a layup with 5:44 remaining.

Texas A&M-Commerce scored 32 points off of the Mustangs' 24 turnovers, while Midwestern State scored just four points on 15 Lions' turnovers.

Ofoegbu paced MSU with 10 points while pulling down nine rebounds, while Moore added nine points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Kaylon Hodge added 10 points, while Brittni Morris had nine points, five rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs.

Melissa Bratton and Britney Jordan paced Texas A&M-Commerce with 14 points apiece as the Lions improved to 7-2.

Midwestern State travels to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word next Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
