SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Brittni Morrison splashed in each of her 13 points in the second half to lead Midwestern State to a 63-55 win over Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.
The senior forward from Archer City connected on three of her five shots as MSU combined to shoot 60-percent in the second half after struggling to a 38.5 percentage before intermission.
"It was all about shot selection," MSU coach Shannon Burks said. "I thought we were playing with a 12-second shot clock in the first half. We were playing a little out of control and taking shots we shouldn't have taken."
Morrison, who had just taken a pair of shots while playing 20 minutes in the first half, gave the Mustangs the momentum in the second half shortly after Incarnate Word used a 9-3 run to trim a nine-point MSU advantage down to a 48-45 margin after Kim Robinson converted a three-point play with 8:45 to play.
Morrison nailed 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, converted one of two free throws and hitting a cutting
Stacey Staten for a layup for a quick 9-3 run to push the advantage back to 57-48 with 3:27 to play.
Midwestern State also put it together on the defensive end after Robinson's three-point play as the Mustangs limited the Cardinals to 1-of-14 shooting as the run mushroomed to 11-4 over a 6:35 stretch.
When Staten converted a pair of free throws with 45 seconds remaining, MSU had its biggest lead of the contest at 59-49.
Junior
Brandy Moore paced the Mustangs with 18 points and added five rebounds, while Staten had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Junior forward
Rosy Ofoegbu turned in another stellar performance and finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while
Kaylon Hodge added six points, seven rebounds and three assists.
The Mustangs have now won three of their last four to improve to 3-4 on the season and will play host to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Monday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with a 6 p.m. tip.
Incarnate Word dropped to 3-5.
