MSU overcomes Cardinals in overtime, 81-75

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's Chris Davis accounted for half of his team-high 22-point effort from the free throw as he buried all six of his attempts in overtime to allow the Mustangs to come away with an 81-75 win over Incarnate Word Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

But it was the Cardinals that allowed MSU to hang around after they missed their last three charity tosses in the closing 23 seconds of regulation as Cameron Teague failed to convert on either end of a double bonus with 2.7 seconds left.

The Mustangs trailed by as many as eight in the first half as Incarnate Word constructed a 29-21 advantage at the 8:49 mark.

But Nolan Richardson IV kickstarted an 8-0 run with a layup and a 3-pointer before Chris Davis connected on another trey to pull the Mustangs even at 29-29 less than two minutes later.

Midwestern State would take a five-point lead on a Trajinski Grigsby jumper with 2:47 to play before Incarnate Word's Pierce Caldwell answered with a pair 3's to pull the Cardinals to 41-40 at intermission.

The teams exchanged the lead five times in the second half before Grigsby tied it for the sixth time on a nifty baseline reverse layup with nine seconds to play.

Incarnate Word rushed the ball up the floor before Teague was fouled on his way to the basket with 2.7 seconds to play.

MSU's Jeremy Ford connected on 6-of-11 shots from the arc to finish with 20 points, while Grigsby had season-high 20 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Incarnate Word's Caldwell led all scorers with 28 points including four 3-pointers.

The Mustangs (4-4) play host to No. 18 Emporia State Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
