Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mustangs finally swat Hornets in four overtimes, 127-124

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Notable moments were aplenty Thursday night as Midwestern State outlasted Emporia State (Kan.) 127-124 in four overtimes at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs and Hornets combined for the most points in the history of MSU basketball as the teams slugged it out for better than two hours in what was also the longest game in school history.

Other than all the records, Christopher Reay's backboard pass to Trajinski Grigsby with less than two seconds to go in the second overtime will be remembered the most.

After Emporia State's DeAndre Townsend hit a driving layup with 1.8 seconds remaining, the Mustangs called a timeout to design a play from the sideline in from of the Emporia State bench on the far end of the floor.

Reay, who was forced against a five-second call, launched a perfect pass which bounded off of the shooter's square and into Grigsby's hands.

Grigsby flipped up a shot from the lane as time expired to send the game to a third overtime period tied at 112-112.

The teams traded baskets in the third extra period and were knotted for the 19th and final time of the night in the fourth overtime at 124-124 when Townsend sent junior Russell Button to the line in a calculated gamble.

Button converted both free throws for his only points of the game and Jeremy Ford scrapped for a rebound when Townsend's desperation 3-pointer missed its mark.

Ford would only hit one of his two free throws as time finally expired to give the Mustangs their fourth-straight win to improve to 5-4.

Nolan Richardson paced a pack of four Mustangs in double figures with 29 points, while Chris Davis finished with 26 points and six assists before fouling out at the end of the first overtime.

Grigsby slugged out his second-straight double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds. He also added three blocks in 51 minutes of court time.

Ford added 17 for MSU, while Michael Godwin had 11.

Townsend paced Emporia State with a game-high 33 points, while Wes Book added 19 and Marvin Lee had 21.

The Hornets fell to 5-4 on the season.

Midwestern State will now enjoy nine days off before returning to Ligon Coliseum on Sat., Dec. 29 then it plays host to St. Mary's. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Notes

* Midwestern State is now 2-2 in overtime contests this season and has now participated in seven extra periods of play. The Mustangs claimed an 81-75 win over Incarnate Word on Monday after suffering overtime losses to Texas A&M-International (70-66) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (78-71) earlier this season.

* Midwestern State and Emporia State combined for 251 points which bested an MSU school record for combined points in a game. MSU and Central Oklahoma combined for 229 points on Feb. 10, 1996 when the Bronchos came away with a 124-105 win in Edmond.

* The 127 points scored by the Mustangs are the second most in D.L. Ligon Coliseum history as MSU scored 129 against Jarvis Christian during the 1989-90 season.

* Emporia State's 124 points tie the most points ever allowed by an MSU squad, matching the 124 scored by Central Oklahoma in the Feb. 10, 1996 game in Edmond. The point total is the most scored by an opponent at Ligon Coliseum.
