CANYON, Texas – It was Midwestern State's day at the West Texas A&M Soccer Field.
Need proof?
Just ask Metro State.
The Roadrunners found themselves in a 3-0 hole Friday.
And that was before 12 minutes could run off the clock.
It just got worse from there as Midwestern State chased the Roadrunners from the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional tournament 8-1 to advance to the final on Saturday.
"I felt pretty confident going into the game," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We had four shots on goal early and scored three of them to put the other team in the hold. It was great to get off to a good start."
Senior midfielder
Obed Becerra got the Mustangs off to a quick start when he converted
Daniel Brown's free kick just 2:37 into the match.
Junior defender
Robert Swann scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute and Brown continued the onslaught on a breakout in the 13th minute to put the Mustangs up 3-0.
Kyle Kmiec was then taken down from behind in the box in the 29th minute by Metro State's Brad Gorham, who earned an ejection to put the Mustangs a man up the rest of the way.
Kmiec converted the penalty kick to give MSU a 3-0 advantage before
Danny Kastelic and
Eddie Lett scored goals before the intermission to increase the Mustangs' advantage to 6-0.
Midwestern added an own goal and another tally by
Jeremy Elder in the second half before Metro State's Phillip Owen put the Roadrunners on the board in the 83rd minute.
The Mustangs outshot the Roadrunners 25-8 for the match while placing 15 shots on goal.
Midwestern will battle West Texas A&M for the third time this season on Saturday.
The Mustangs claimed a 3-1 win over the Buffs on Sep. 21 in Canyon before falling in the regular season finale 1-0 last Sunday.
